Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. - James 1:12

Niagara Falls, Canada is less than 80 miles from my house. It is home to two Sheraton hotels -- Sheraton Fallsview and Sheraton On The Falls. Last month I was invited to sign books at Sheraton On The Falls. Even though I knew which one of the Sheratons I wanted, I still mixed them up when I searched for directions. I didn't notice my error until I pulled up to Sheraton Fallsview on the day of the signing. Ignoring all of my male instincts, I promptly went to the front desk and asked for directions to On The Falls.
They sent me back through Clifton Hill, a crowded tourist area where traffic came to a halt. It took twenty minutes to drive the last block, but I finally made it to On The Falls. There, Ken the valet told me to park down the street and walk back, since I wasn't staying overnight. Hoping to avoid another delay, I politely asked him if there was any way that he could fit me in. He kindly let me use their valet parking. Thanks, Ken.
The event was on the third floor. As a crowd slowly grew around the lobby elevator doors, I realized I should have taken the stairs. At the third floor they told me that the book signing had been moved to the fifth floor. Not wanting to wait for the elevator again, I dashed up the stairs. The door to the fifth floor was locked! Back to the third floor I ran. After a few more minutes and another stop for directions, I finally made it to the signing. Although the trip was less than smooth, the signing was a great success.

"Forget it, Josh. I tried walking once. It doesn't work." |
Have you ever encountered delays, distractions, mistakes and misunderstandings on the way to success? Have you created some of the obstacles yourself? Have you prolonged the agony by not asking for help? Have you allowed certain obstacles to defeat you and keep you from trying again?
I could have easily backed out of that book signing at any time. Less than 1,000 people were there, and I sold and signed just a handful of books. If I had called in sick, lost or delayed, it probably would not have had a significant effect on my career. Or would it?
Ask yourself...
- How do I handle trials in my life?
- How does it show up in my career, relationships and spiritual life?
- What reward does perseverance bring?
