And if what was fading away came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts! - 2 Corinthians 3:11
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. - 2 Corinthians 4:16

I spoke at a local home for the aged on April 1 (no fooling!), and promptly fell in love with the people there. Iva was eager to get the program rolling, so she hollered, "Let's get this show on the road!" for all to hear. Mary, a former army nurse at least 50 years my senior, asked if I would marry her. Later, I chatted with a charming lady who didn't seem to realize that I couldn't speak Polish, but was delighted just to have me sit with her and listen. Hey, my speaking may be limited to English, but I can listen in any language.
Despite their physical and mental challenges, all of the people living at that home shared a keen awareness of their mortality. As they approach (and sometimes pass) the century mark, the older residents understand that death is inevitable. The younger residents also realize that, even though they may have many years left, the remainder of those years will be spent within the walls of that home. Some are bitter, but an amazing number of them have a tremendous sense of peace about them.
Where does their peace come from? It obviously doesn't come from self-reliance; each one of them depends on the care of others for their survival. It's not about how much money they make, how many friends they have, or what kind of car, wheelchair or walker they have in the parking lot. It has everything to do with a personal relationship with their Maker, and knowing that heaven is their reward when they pass on.

"Wow, it's the new Turbo Walker 3000!" |
Thanks to the marvels of modern medicine and some longevity in my genes, I expect to live well into my 90's. While I'm in no hurry to experience the physical deterioration that comes with age, I'm excited about the possibilities of growing spiritually day by day, sharing my faith and leading others to the same peace shared by my new friends at that home. What do you want to be when you get to the end of your earthly days -- bitter, or better?
Ask yourself...
- What is my chosen source of peace?
- Does that source extend beyond my own ability and circumstances?
