You may say to yourself, “My
power and the strength of my hands have
produced this wealth for me.”
But remember the Lord your God, for
it is he who gives you the ability to
produce wealth… – Deuteronomy 8:17-18

Our six-year-old son Jacob grew up with
the convenience of Velcro fasteners on most of his shoes and
boots. Two weeks ago, he wanted to wear a pair of lace-up
shoes. I was shocked when he asked me to help him tie them. I
learned to tie my shoes by the time I was four or five, yet my
six-year-old son still needed help. Was there something wrong
with my son?
No, there's nothing wrong with
Jacob, or any other six-year-old today who still has trouble
tying shoes. With the popularity of Velcro, many children
haven't used laces enough to learn to tie them well. Jacob
and I both have the ability to tie our own shoes. I was
simply given more opportunity to develop that skill as a
youngster, and had taken those opportunities for granted.

"OK, Dad. You teach me how to tie my shoes and
I'll teach you how to use the DVD player."

While most of us have been blessed with
the ability to tie our own shoes, every person reading this
newsletter has a unique set of talents, a gift from God unlike
any other. Not only has God given you a unique set of
talents, but He also provides unique opportunities to use and
develop those talents for the benefit of others.
I was given the unique
talent and opportunity to write and illustrate a book that
others could use to benefit their lives. Looking back at
all of the timing and resources that had to come together, there
is no doubt that God's hand was in it all the way. Yet I
was very reluctant to return the spotlight and credit to Him
when the glowing reviews started coming in. The result?
God humbled me to realize that He is the source of my talents
and the opportunities to use them, and He alone deserves the
credit.
Ask yourself...
- What are my unique talents?
- What unique opportunities have
I been given to use and develop those talents?
- Am I giving credit where credit
is due?
Robert Woodruff said, "There is no limit
to what a man can do or how far he can go if he doesn't mind who
gets the credit."
Who will you give the credit to?
