Mule Variations
by Tom Waits

"In a land there's a town
And in that town there's a house
And in that house there's a woman
And in that woman there's a heart I love.

I'm gonna take it with me when I go."

In memory of
Dennis D. Lee

There's a train that's leavin'
Down the railroad track
Where that train is goin'
It won't never be back.

I don't know where I'm goin'
I don't know what I'll be
But I will think of you, yes indeed

There's a train that's rollin'
And it comes to everyone
It's a long time a comin'
But we've yet to see the sun

"The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities." - Stephen Covey

A few days ago my brother-in-law Dennis passed away. A gifted artist with an amazing eye for detail, Dennis had an infectious giggle and an incredible sense of humor. He found passion and joy in situations and things that many of us would be too busy, impatient or preoccupied to notice. We will miss him.

My wife and I flew out to Edmonton for his funeral. We have been married for almost 17 years, and in all that time we had never flown out to Edmonton for a visit with Dennis and Susan.

What a shame that we so often have to have our world turned upside-down in order to see and appreciate the blessings. How unfortunate that I somehow found the time and money for my wife and me to attend Dennis' funeral but couldn't quite seem to find the time and money to visit him when he was alive and well.

Dennis was gone in the blink of an eye. Whether we like it or not, we never know which day, hour or minute will be our last. Don't wait until you get that phone call. Who do you really care about that you haven't seen or spoken with in a while? What has been keeping you from contacting them? By when will you give them a call, write them a letter, send them an email or - better yet - meet them face to face?

Ask yourself...

  • What everyday things do I allow to distract me from truly important things?

  • If time and money were not an issue, what would I do differently? Why?

  • How would my life change if I 'scheduled my priorities' rather than 'prioritized my schedule'?

"Living with the immediacy of death helps you sort out your priorities in life. It helps you to live a less trivial life." - Sogyal Rinpoche

"Priorities reveal themselves. We're all transparent against the face of the clock." - Eric Zorn

"Give me five minutes with a person's checkbook, and I will tell you where their heart is." - Billy Graham

"Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need." - Matthew 6:33
