In Memory of Uncle Gordon

A man of determination, influence and humor.

"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

| "Everything you want in life has a price connected to it. There's a price to pay if you want to make things better, a price to pay just for leaving things as they are, a price for everything." - Harry Browne

Last month I paid the wrong price.

I had worked hard for three months to decrease my body fat and increase my lean weight. Things were going well with my training, and I started to coast.

My usual five to six days per week at the gym dwindled down to one or two. I willingly negated the benefits of a walk around the city of Ottawa by downing one of "Ottawa's best milkshakes" at Zac's Diner. A price was being paid, but not the price I ultimately wanted to pay.

Last month, for the first time, my lean weight dropped and my fat weight went up. Overall, I'm still better off than when I started training, but when my monthly update curled out of my trainer's printer and into my hand, I knew that things had to change.

I guarantee that this next month will be very different. And I owe the change to a simple monthly wake-up call.

So, consider this your monthly wake-up call. How was last month for you?

Ask yourself...

I paid a price last month.

  • When and where was the price worth it?
  • When and where was the price not worth it?
  • What price will I pay this month?

"Victory and defeat are each of the same price." - Thomas Jefferson

"There is no victory at bargain basement prices." - Dwight D. Eisenhower

"In this age, which believes that there is a short cut to everything, the greatest lesson to be learned is that the most difficult way is, in the long run, the easiest." - Henry Miller

"Success is the child of drudgery and perseverance. It cannot be coaxed or bribed; pay the price and it is yours." - Orison Swett Marden
