Celebration
of Discipline
by Richard J. Foster
"Like a child exploring the attic of an old
house on a rainy day, discovering a trunk full of
treasure and then calling all his brothers and sisters
to share the find, Richard J. Foster has 'found' the
spiritual disciplines that the modern world stored
away and forgot, and has excitedly called us to
celebrate them. For they are, as he shows us, the
instruments of joy, the way into mature Christian
spirituality and abundant life." - Eugene H.
Peterson, author of The Message |

The
Traveler's Gift

Only a few months ago, he was a successful

Ponder's incredible journey is over, he will have

Then
Jesus gave the following illustration: "What good is it
for one blind person to lead another? The first one will fall
into a ditch and pull the other down also. A student is not
greater than the teacher. But the student who works hard will
become like the teacher." - Luke 6:39-40
For the last few weeks I've been working with a personal
trainer to add some muscle to my 6' (183 cm) tall, 180-pound
(82 kg) frame.
After months of "doing my own thing" at the gym,
what spurred me on to seek Tyrone's mentorship?
I wanted to learn how to gain muscle in a way that was
natural and healthy. I wanted to make sure that my time and
effort were focused and reaping the maximum benefit. And I
wanted to work with someone who was attentive, ethical and
pushed me farther than I would push myself.
With Tyrone's help I have made - and continue to make -
healthy improvements in my eating and exercise habits. They
aren't always easy or comfortable, but the long-term results
are well worth it.
Like many others I see at the gym every day, my own
knowledge and effort had reached a plateau. We all reach
plateaus in life, and in many more areas than physical
fitness. What keeps us from seeking help to take the next
step? Are we too proud to ask? Are we too
"comfortable" to leave where we are? Are we using
lack of time, finances or health as an excuse? Are we busy
following the blind?

Who are your mentors?
He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion
of fools suffers harm. - Proverbs 13:20
Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost
all you have, get understanding. - Proverbs 4:7
Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise
is much more important, for it promises a reward in both this
life and the next. - 1 Timothy 4:8
All athletes practice strict self-control. They do it to
win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal
prize. - 1 Corinthians 9:25

running for your prize,
