Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell
"Somewhere in my basement sits a Velvet Elvis
- a painting of the King himself, air-brushed onto
black velvet in a wooden frame.
What if the painter of my Velvet Elvis announced
there was no more need to paint, that he had painted
the ultimate painting? We would think he had lost his
mind because of our instinctive understanding that art
is never done - it's the endless process of learning,
exploring, shaping and forming.
And it's no different with faith. The Christian
faith will never be complete. We will always be
exploring and discovering what it means to live in
harmony with God and each other. If we don't, our
faith may end up in the basement.
This book is about the endless need to keep
painting..."

"The
life of man is a journey; a journey that must be traveled,
however bad the roads or accommodation."
- Oliver Goldsmith
I just had my second annual meeting with my favorite
photographer, Jordan Morrison (see his link to the left), to update my website photos. This year we arranged to
meet at his studio in the beautiful hills of Caledon, Ontario,
Canada. The studio is at the end of a long driveway that winds
its way through a forest and up a large hill.
It was dark, and a light dusting of snow covered the
driveway as my wife and I gingerly wound our way up the
unfamiliar slope. Halfway up the driveway, I hit a patch of
ice and briefly lost control of the car. We stopped safely,
but the car then started to slowly slide back down the
driveway. After several minutes of slow, short gains, spinning
tires and quick descents, we knew that we were stuck.
We couldn't get any further up the driveway without backing
all the way down and attacking it with more momentum - a task
that would take at least another 15 minutes. We opted to ease
the car off to the side of the driveway and proceed to the
studio on foot.
As usual with Jordan, the shoot was a lot of fun and a
great success. Still, if we had relied only on our car to get
us there, it may not have happened that night at all. After
all the photos were taken, Jordan's father guided our car
safely back down the driveway, and we went home. Without our
cell phone, which we forgot at the studio. Needless to say, we
chose not to drive back for it.
Jordan kindly returned the phone to us the next day.
After that experience, I was thinking about how our lives
can be like that trip to the studio. We start off headed in a
certain direction with a certain vehicle to get us there.
Along the way, obstacles and challenges are bound to appear.
We may have to change vehicles or approaches to reach our
destination. We may have to retrace our steps and start over
again. Or we may even find out that we were headed up the
wrong hill in the first place. And we may misplace - or find -
a few things in the process.
"Success is not the place one arrives, but rather
the spirit with which one undertakes and continues the
journey."
- Alex Noble
"If all difficulties were known at the outset of a
long journey, most of us would never start out at all." -
Dan Rather
Show me the path where I should walk, O Lord; point out
the right road for me to follow. - Psalm 25:4
