Sunday, January 16. 4:02 a.m. I woke to the sound of a short, shrill... *beep* "What was that?" *beep* "Oh, no." *beep* "The smoke detector." *beep* "The batteries must be low." *beep* My internal argument began. "You should get up and replace the batteries." "But we don't have any spare batteries." *beep* "Maybe there is a way to disarm that warning beep." "If I do that, it might turn the whole smoke detector off, and that wouldn't be safe." *beep* "You should fix it before it wakes up the rest of the family." "Hey, if they have slept through it so far, it probably won't wake them up at all." *beep* "Why are you so reluctant to get up and fix it?" "I'm tired, it's warm and comfortable here in bed, and it's cold and uncomfortable out there." *beep* "Larry, what would Jesus do?" *beep* *beep* *beep* "Jesus didn't have a smoke detector." I rolled over and went back to sleep.

"Fine, maybe that ad wasn't for the 'Dessert of the Month Club'."

While it may be a funny story to tell, I also learned a serious lesson from that event. If I am willing and able to ignore something as obvious and important as a beeping smoke detector, what other things in my life am I missing in the name of preserving my comfort? Am I only seeing what I want to see, and hearing what I want to hear? Ask yourself... Am I completely open to God's direction for my life? Is God trying to tell me something that I haven't been willing to hear? What blessings may I be missing?
