Waking the Dead
by John Eldredge

"Waking the Dead leads listeners to understand how to live from the heart, care for their heart like treasures of the kingdom, and give from fullness instead of emptiness."

"Truly, when the day of judgment comes, we shall not be examined as to what we have read, but what we have done; not how well we have spoken, but how we have lived." - Thomas A Kempis

"Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering." - Luke 11:52

"I'm not a teacher: only a fellow-traveler of whom you asked the way. I pointed ahead -- ahead of myself as well as you." - George Bernard Shaw
| Two weeks ago, I received a phone call from a man who lives in my city. He had seen one of my reviews on Amazon.com, followed a few links, and realized that I also live in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. With some trepidation, he phoned to ask if I would consider meeting with him over a coffee. He was slightly surprised when I returned his call and booked a meeting for the following week.

As I signed his copy of my book, he shared how nervous he had been to call an author and professional speaker who had his own website. He was worried that I might have too much "status" to consider meeting with him. I assured him that if that day ever arrived, I would no longer be effective as an author, speaker, husband, father or friend. Learning and sharing success principles for a living doesn't make me better than anyone else.

"Stand back, buddy. I'm an expert."

Conventional wisdom says that authors and speakers must market themselves as "experts" in order to distinguish themselves. Well, it may cost me a few speaking engagements, but I refuse to fall into that trap. By considering myself an expert, I limit my growth and the growth of my peers. I'm no expert. Just call me a fellow student, who loves to share the learning experience. And likes to go out for coffee.

Ask yourself...
  • Are there areas in my life where I consider myself an expert?
  • Am I willing to acknowledge the things I don't know?
  • Do I sometimes struggle to apply the things I do know?
