I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. - 1 Corinthians 9:22b-23

It's harder to make amends with an offended friend than to capture a fortified city. Arguments separate friends like a gate locked with iron bars. - Proverbs 18:19

What is the secret to such fast growth? Well, word of mouth helps, and building a strong network of like- minded people definitely doesn't hurt. Still, it all comes down to delivering a message that educates, entertains, equips and encourages, in a way that doesn't offend.

Several weeks ago, I posted an audio message at EmpoweringMessages.com (see left). In the message, I used an example of some urinals in an Amsterdam airport. This week, the website's founder let me know that he had received some negative feedback, and asked if I would change the message. What would you do?

"I wish you'd stop doing this. It's cold out here."

While I must admit that I feel some people take offense far too quickly these days, I had a choice. Did I want to be "right", or did I want to be effective? Taking out that example did not compromise the message, so I stayed up until 5 a.m. to revise and re-record the message. While I will never compromise my beliefs and values, I am willing to check my delivery once in a while.

Ask yourself...
  • Would I rather be "right" or effective?
  • Have I ever offended someone because I needed to be "right"?
  • How may I communicate in a way that honors my values but doesn't offend?

Keep running for your prize,
